You might think you know where the Bible stands on the subject of homosexuality, but when was the last time you actually checked?
In the spirited documentary Fish out of Water, filmmaker Ky Dickens explores the seven most notoriously homophobic Bible passages with the help of theologians from across the religious spectrum. Presented as a mix of insightful interviews and endearing animation, Fish out of Water, which takes the subject but not itself too seriously, explodes the conventional arguments of hate.
The film begins with an animated recollection of the fallout at Vanderbilt University when the films director, Ky Dickens, came out to her sorority sisters. Their rabid rejection sparks her search for Bible-based condemnation. Crisscrossing America and listening to the countrys impassioned speech on this divisive issue, she speaks with ministers of all denominations, recording the experiences of the oppressed and the justifications of the oppressors.
At the films core are interviews with LGBTQ folks from different religions, classes and ethnic groups who have survived intolerance, most often from their own families. Their candid stories give the fight for equality and the political debate on these issues a voice and face, offering inspiration to those still ensnared in struggle.
By using original animation and witty illustrations as its tool for exploring the Bible, Fish out of Water makes this controversial and dusty topic accessible to those who dont like talking about religion.

Fish out of Water will be hitting the festival circuit in 2009
